All students in the Bachelor of Music concentrations (Music Education and Performance) take the sophomore continuation jury.
To qualify for the sophomore continuation jury, students must have completed:
- MCC II
- Music History I
- Class Piano I
If a student is enrolled in MCC II the semester they are scheduled to take their jury due to failing either MCC I or MCC II the first time they took the course, they may take the SCJ if they are in position to pass the course at the time of the jury. If the student passes the SCJ but fails MCC II, their SCJ will count as a scratch. The student will need to play the jury again the next semester.
If a student is enrolled in Music History I or Class Piano I the semester they are scheduled to take their jury due to failing either of these courses the first time they took the course, they may take the SCJ if they are in position to pass the course at the time of the jury. If the student passes the SCJ but fails either of these courses, their SCJ will count as a scratch. The student will need to play the jury again the next semester.
Students have three tries to take the sophomore jury. Their 4th semester must be their first try. If a student fails to do this during his or her 4th semester, this counts as one try. Students will no longer be able to continue in the BM degree plan if they fail three times.
If music education students fail, they cannot take MEC 2 or MCC 4. If performance students fail, they cannot take MCC 4. In both cases, students may not take 300 level lessons. Transfer students who begin their study at UNO their junior year must take one semester of MUS 215 applied lessons before doing the jury. The first attempt of the jury must be at the end of their first semester.
Each area has specific criteria that includes:- Sight reading
- Demonstration of fundamentals, such as scales (to be determined by area)
- Two contrasting selections
- The jury must fit within 20 minutes.
Each jury will be video-reviewed by their normal jury panel.
